Like other animals, dogs also need water for their effective functioning. Water is necessary for every living being. However, different animals need different quantities of water for their survival. It is famous that camels can live for days without having water while other mammals can’t go such long without water.

Dogs are also one of those animals that show the symptoms of dehydration within a day. Owners need to know these symptoms that appear as a result of dehydration.  So, I am going to tell you, how long can a dog go without water? And what amount is needed?

Dogs can go 48-72 hours (2-3 days) long without water but the time varies depending upon the age and health conditions. If the dog is 1-2 years old then it will start to show signs of dehydration within 24 hours. Similarly, a puppy will start to show signs of dehydration after the first 6 hours.

In the end, I will say that prevention is better than cure. Firstly measure the weight of your dog or consult your vet to know the amount of water needed by the dog. Then try to follow all the steps that I have mentioned to make sure that your dog is drinking enough water.

Put the water in such a place where access to water is easy. Then try to put many bowls at different locations so that if a dog is busy with some interesting activity, and feels too lazy to go to a particular place, it can drink from anywhere it wants.

The next thing is to always measure the amount of water the dog is talking about daily. If it is talking enough water then it’s ok.

And if not then you have to encourage your dog to drink enough water. And if dehydration occurs, unfortunately then one should try to analyze what is the level of dehydration. If it’s normal then try the given remedies but if it’s severe then seek any vet.
